Post-Liposuction Nerve Palsy in the Upper Arms2026.01.31
Temporary nerve palsy can occasionally occur after upper-arm liposuction, although the incidence is quite low.
During surgery, the cannula passes through the fat layer where five major nerves of the brachial plexus run.
If the cannula irritates or compresses these nerves, temporary numbness or weakness may appear.
Importantly:
✔ The nerves are not cut
✔ Symptoms usually resolve naturally
This is similar to the temporary facial nerve weakness that can occur after facial liposuction.

Recovery Timeline
Most patients recover within:
- 2–3 months,
- up to 6 months in rare cases.
What helps recovery?
- Vitamin B1 and B12 supplementation to support nerve metabolism
- Steroid IV therapy to reduce inflammation
- Gentle rehabilitation and movement to promote nerve recovery

Precautions during recovery
- Avoid strong massage
- Avoid excessive heat
- Keep moderate movement and avoid prolonged fixed positions
Temporary nerve palsy can be alarming, but with proper postoperative care, recovery is expected.
