Patients come to AVAN TOKYO from overseas for liposuction and breast augmentation. Dr. Shin Moriwaki (ECFMG Certificate holder) explains the procedure, downtime and risks directly in English, so you can talk with the surgeon himself without an interpreter.

Liposuction FAQ
- QDoes fat come back after liposuction?
- ALiposuction removes the fat cells themselves. Because the number of fat cells hardly increases in adulthood, the treated area has fewer cells that can store fat, so rebound is less likely. However, the remaining fat cells can still grow, so healthy eating and exercise remain important after surgery.
- QDoes downtime differby area?
- AYes. The upper arms are relatively short, with desk work possible from the next day. Thighs and abdomen involve a larger area, so pain and swelling tend to be stronger, and most return in about 2–3 days. For the face (cheeks and under the chin), bruising can be hidden with makeup or a mask, and some return the next day. In all cases contracture peaks about 1 month after surgery and usually settles within about 3 months (it may last about 6 months for the abdomen).
- QHow long does the surgery take?
- AIt depends on the area and amount of fat, but about 1–2 hours per area is a guide. For multiple areas, we adjust to what can safely be done in one session. With general anesthesia, please allow about half a day including preparation and post-operative observation.
- QCan multiple areas be treated at once?
- AYes. For safety, the amount of fat removed in one surgery is limited to 5,000 cc; if more is needed, we propose dividing it into several sessions. For extensive liposuction, general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist may be chosen.
- QWhere will the scars be?
- ASmall incisions of about 2–5 mm for the thin tube (cannula) used to remove fat. We choose inconspicuous places: elbow or armpit creases for the upper arms, the groin or buttock crease for the thighs, areas hidden by underwear for the abdomen, and below the ears or under the chin for the face.
- QAre there costs other thanthe treatment fee?
- AAnesthesia is charged separately. See the “Anesthesia” table above for IV sedation and general anesthesia fees. A surcharge applies to the treatment fee for BMI 25 or above. Any other necessary costs are itemized in the estimate given at counseling.
- QWhat is the monitor price?
- AIt is the price listed as “monitor” in our price list. It applies to patients who agree to photos and videos and who attend follow-ups at 1 week and 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery, subject to screening. Monitor prices may end without notice.
