What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction is a procedure to reduce the size of the breast by removing excess skin, fat, and mammary glands. By adjusting the size and shape of the breast, it can also improve symptoms such as shoulder stiffness, bra strap digging, and eczema in the lower part of the breast.

Breast reduction surgery is not only about reducing the size of the breasts, but also about shaping them beautifully. At our clinic, we utilize the techniques we have developed in breast augmentation surgery to achieve a natural and beautiful breast, taking into consideration the balance of fat, mammary glands, skin, and nipples. During the counseling session, we will carefully listen to the patient’s wishes and propose the best plan for each individual patient. If you want to achieve your ideal breasts, please contact us for a consultation.

Breast reduction surgery is recommended for

Types of Breast Reduction

Breast Lifting Surgery

Breast Lifting Surgery is a method of restoring drooping breasts to their original position and beautiful shape. The nipple and areola are moved upward by removing excess skin with little or no removal of the mammary glands. If the nipple itself is to be reduced in size, an incision can be made around the nipple to reduce its size.

The unique feature of this procedure is that there is minimal damage to the mammary glands and breastfeeding is not affected after the surgery. In addition, for those who are concerned about the fullness of the breasts, silicone bags or fat injections can be used in combination to create fuller, more beautiful breasts.

There are various treatment methods available depending on the patient’s condition, such as incisions above the areola to improve the orientation of the top of the breast or around the areola to improve the position of the nipple. Both methods have little or no effect on the mammary glands or ducts.

Breast Reduction Goes Method

The Goes method reduces the size of the breast by making a circular incision around the nipple and removing excess skin and fat. This procedure is characterized by the fact that the incision line is along the nipple, so scars are less noticeable and the result is more natural. In addition, since there is little damage to the mammary glands, breastfeeding after the procedure is less affected.

During the procedure, an incision is made around the nipple, unnecessary tissue is removed, and the nipple is moved upward and carefully sutured. The nipple is then moved upward and carefully sutured.

Breast Reduction McKissock Method

The McKissock method reduces the size of the breast by removing excess tissue from the lower part of the breast and moving the nipple and areola upward. The scar is less noticeable because the nipple area and underbust are hidden, leaving a linear scar on the lower part of the breast. The scar will fade with time.

Please note that since a portion of the mammary tissue is removed, it may be impossible to breastfeed after the surgery.

Breast reduction surgery can be performed in a variety of ways depending on the patient’s wishes and body type. We will suggest the most appropriate method according to the condition of each patient’s breasts and the type of breasts they would like to have. Please feel free to consult with us first.

Downtime and side effects of breast reduction

This section describes the downtime period for breast reduction surgery, including pain, swelling, and redness.

Pain About 1 week
Redness and swelling About 1-2 weeks
Internal bleeding and bruising About 3 weeks
Scar Underbust, around the nipple, and under the breast Fades over time

After the procedure, you may experience various symptoms such as wound pain and discomfort due to swelling. We will prescribe pain medication, which you should take as directed.

Immediately after the procedure, swelling and swelling may cause a left to right difference or the breasts may feel larger, but this will improve naturally over time.

You may also experience a temporary loss of sensation in your breasts, but this will gradually recover over several months. Due to the surgery to lift the breasts, the lower half of the breasts may lose their roundness and feel unnatural for a while after the surgery, but the stiffness will ease and the natural roundness will return in about 3 to 6 months.

If the pain does not subside, or if you experience fever or severe swelling, please contact our office immediately.

Breast Reduction Procedure Flow

STEP1Counseling

We will ask you detailed questions about your health, your concerns, and your ideal breast shape. If you have any concerns or questions about the procedure, please do not hesitate to ask.

STEP2Preoperative Examination

Before the procedure, you will be asked to undergo a blood test to check your physical condition. If you are allergic to general anesthesia, or if you are taking any medications on a regular basis, please be sure to consult your doctor.

STEP3Size Measurement and Photography

Before the procedure, we will accurately measure and photograph your breasts in order to share an image of what you will look like after the procedure. By confirming the results with the patient and doctor, we can get closer to the ideal result.

STEP4Anesthesia administration and treatment

The treatment is performed while you are asleep under intravenous anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain. You can relax and enjoy the procedure.

A small tube (drain) is inserted under the breast to drain the blood that has accumulated in the body. This drain is very important to reduce swelling and internal bleeding. It is usually removed one to two days after the procedure.

STEP5Recovery in the recovery room – going home

After the procedure, you will rest in the recovery room for rest and can go home when your condition is stable. Swelling, pain, and internal bleeding may be present for a while after the surgery, but will usually gradually improve over the next few weeks.

Since intravenous anesthesia is used, please refrain from driving on the day of the procedure due to the effects of the anesthesia, and return home by public transportation or by a safe means, such as by having someone pick you up and take you home.

How to spend time after breast reduction surgery

Avoid strenuous exercise and drinking until stitches are removed.

Stitches are removed approximately one week after surgery, but until then, refrain from strenuous exercise and alcohol consumption in order to reduce the stress on the wound. Exercise that uses the entire body, such as jogging and sauna, and lifting heavy objects require special attention.

Exercise and drinking may increase blood circulation, which may worsen swelling and pain, and may distort the breasts that have been so carefully shaped. Until the stitches are removed, please limit yourself to light housework and other activities that do not put a strain on your body.

Do not put pressure on the breasts.

To reduce stress on the breasts, avoid sleeping on your stomach or any other sleeping position that puts direct pressure on the breasts.

When sleeping on your back, we recommend that you use a cushion or other support to elevate your upper body slightly so that you can rest. When sleeping on your side, also be careful not to put pressure on the breasts.

Wear a bra without wires

For 2-3 months after surgery, wear a soft bra without wires to reduce pressure on the wound.

Soft bras made of soft material without wires feel comfortable and less constrictive, so they gently support the delicate breasts after the procedure and are comfortable and secure to wear.
