Here are the questions we are asked most often at AVAN TOKYO Ginza Joint Regenerative Medicine. We answer them in plain terms for first-time visitors considering injections of stem cell culture supernatant into the joints.
About Joint Injections of Stem Cell Culture Supernatant
Q1: What is stem cell culture supernatant?
It is a liquid containing components secreted while stem cells are cultured, including cytokines and exosomes. We use culture supernatant obtained from adipose-derived stem cells, manufactured under quality control.
Q2: Are stem cells themselves injected into the joint?
No. We inject a liquid containing the components secreted by stem cells, not the cells themselves. No surgery to harvest your own fat is required.
Q3: How is it different from hyaluronic acid injections?
Hyaluronic acid injections aim to lubricate the joint. Injections of stem cell culture supernatant aim to reduce inflammation inside the joint and support tissue repair. We also see patients whose pain has not changed despite continued hyaluronic acid injections.
Q4: Which joints do you treat?
We see patients with pain in the knee (such as knee osteoarthritis), shoulder (such as frozen shoulder or rotator cuff injury), elbow and wrist (such as tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow), ankle, hip and other joints. Whether the injection is suitable is decided at the examination.
Q5: I have been advised to have surgery. Can the injection help me avoid it?
We cannot promise that. Depending on the condition of the joint, surgery may be the better option. At the examination we check the joint and your previous treatment, and explain whether the injection is suitable, including what it can and cannot be expected to do.
About the Treatment Process and Results
Q6: How long does it take to see results?
This varies from person to person. Many patients notice changes after several injections, and we suggest the 3-session course as a general guide.
Q7: How long do the results last?
This varies, but one injection is generally said to last about one to two months. Depending on your condition, we may suggest regular injections.
Q8: Is the injection painful?
We use a fine needle and local anesthesia when needed to keep pain to a minimum. You may feel pressure or brief pain during the injection.
Q9: How long does the treatment take?
A joint injection takes about 30 to 40 minutes including preparation. Afterwards, please rest at the clinic for about 10 to 15 minutes. The first visit takes a little longer because it includes the consultation and examination.
Q10: Are there any restrictions after the injection?
You can go about your daily life on the same day. Please avoid strenuous exercise on the day of the injection.
Q11: Are there any side effects?
Pain, swelling or bruising may occur at the injection site, and these usually ease within a few days. Infection can occur in rare cases, so please contact us right away if the injected joint becomes very swollen, feels hot, or the pain becomes stronger.
Q12: How often do I need to visit?
As a guide, once every two weeks for the first one to two months, then once every one to two months. The schedule can be adjusted to suit you.
About Fees and Payment
Q13: How much does it cost?
A knee joint injection costs ¥150,000–¥298,000 per session, and the 3-session course costs ¥398,000–¥698,500. Other joints such as the shoulder, elbow and ankle cost ¥120,000–¥248,000 per session (all prices include tax). Fees vary depending on the condition of the joint and the dosage, and we explain them at the consultation before treatment. Please see the fee schedule page for details.
Q14: Is insurance coverage available?
No. This is elective (self-pay) treatment, so health insurance does not apply and the full cost is paid by the patient.
Q15: What payment methods are available?
We accept cash, credit cards, debit cards, and medical loans. Accepted credit cards are VISA, MasterCard, JCB, American Express, and Diners Club. If you would like to use a medical loan, please ask at the consultation.
Q16: Can I cancel a course midway?
Yes. In that case, the sessions already completed are calculated at the regular fee and the remainder is refunded. A cancellation fee of 10% of the unused amount (up to ¥20,000) applies.
About Appointments and Visits
Q17: Is there a charge for the first consultation?
The initial examination and consultation are free. Please feel free to contact us.
Q18: Which doctors will treat me?
Joint examinations and injections are performed by Dr. Moriwaki, the clinic director, and Dr. Nanko, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon.
Q19: Can I book a same-day appointment?
Yes, if there is availability. However, the first visit includes a consultation and examination, so we recommend booking in advance.
About Who Can Receive Treatment
Q20: Is there an age limit?
There is no upper age limit for adults. Minors need the consent of a parent or guardian.
Q21: Can I receive treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Because safety has not been sufficiently established, we generally do not provide treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Q22: Can I receive treatment if I have a chronic condition?
It depends on the type and state of the condition. We will ask about it in detail at the consultation, and the doctor will decide. If you take any medication, please bring your medication record or a note of the medication names.
Q23: I have allergies. Is that a problem?
It depends on the allergy. We will ask about it in detail at the consultation. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a treatment, please be sure to tell us.
