Recently, aesthetic clinics — mostly overseas — have started offering HBOT to “reduce liposuction swelling faster” or “improve fat graft survival.” The concept behind liposuction hyperbaric oxygen therapy is to correct postoperative tissue hypoxia early and thereby accelerate tissue recovery and wound healing.

Why Does Oxygen Work Under Pressure? Henry’s Law and Dissolved Oxygen

Normally, oxygen is transported by hemoglobin inside red blood cells. But when you breathe pure oxygen under higher pressure, the amount of oxygen physically dissolved in plasma rises dramatically. By Henry’s Law, at 2.5 atmospheres the dissolved oxygen content can rise roughly 10-20 fold.

This allows oxygen to reach edematous tissues and areas around damaged capillaries where red blood cells struggle to circulate. Expected effects include:

Contraindications and Risks to Consider

HBOT is relatively safe, but the following patients face absolute or relative contraindications:

・Untreated pneumothorax (risk of progression to tension pneumothorax with pressure changes)

・Upper respiratory infection, sinusitis, or otitis media (Eustachian tube blockage causing severe pain or tympanic membrane damage)

・Severe claustrophobia (risk of panic attacks in the chamber)

・History of or ongoing treatment with certain chemotherapy agents such as bleomycin and doxorubicin

・Severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Oxygen toxicity (central nervous system and pulmonary forms) is not zero and requires proper protocol management. Also, inexpensive home or spa “mild hyperbaric oxygen capsules” (around 1.3 atmospheres) differ significantly in physical and physiological effect from medical-grade HBOT (2.0-2.5 atmospheres, 100% oxygen) and should not be treated as equivalent.

・Evidence: few clear RCTs on swelling and bruising after liposuction; individual response varies widely.

・Time cost: repeated clinic visits during the fatigued early postoperative period.

・Prioritize basics: compression, nutrition, sleep, and staged movement remain the most cost-effective way to recover quickly.

What matters far more is preserving healthy fat layers during surgery, designing tumescent anesthesia precisely, wearing proper compression garments, supporting recovery with protein and iron-focused nutrition, and returning to daily life in a paced, sensible way.

Before turning to adjunct therapies, first do the basics of postoperative care thoroughly. That, in my view, is the safest and most cost-effective path to “healing quickly and beautifully.”
