7 Things to Compare When Choosing a Liposuction Clinic in Tokyo | Surgeon, Total Cost, Anesthesia and Revision Policy2026.10.11

“I want liposuction in Tokyo, but there are so many clinics – what should I compare?” We hear this question often, including from patients travelling from overseas. Rankings and reviews can be a starting point, but liposuction is surgery, so in the end you should check for yourself that the conditions are ones you can trust. This article lists 7 points to compare between clinics and how to verify each one at a consultation or on the clinic’s website. For every point we also state the facts for AVAN TOKYO Ginza Liposuction Clinic.

Key points

・Compare 7 things: who operates, cases for the area you want treated, costs beyond the listed price, anesthesia, follow-up visits, revision policy and access

・Do not compare listed prices alone – check the total including anesthesia, compression garments and pre-operative blood tests in a written estimate

・Whether the doctor who consults with you also operates and sees you afterwards directly affects the result and your peace of mind

・At AVAN TOKYO, liposuction is handled by the director, Dr. Shin Moriwaki, from consultation through surgery and follow-up, and every cost item is listed in the estimate

Point 1: Who performs the surgery, and does the doctor change?

The result of liposuction depends on the design – which layer to remove, how much, and how to blend it with neighbouring areas – and on the surgeon who carries it out. If the doctor at the consultation and the operating surgeon are different people, the intent of the design may not be fully passed on. Liposuction also takes 3–6 months to reach its final shape, so it matters whether the doctor who follows you up is the one who designed the surgery.

How to check

・Ask at the consultation: “Which doctor will operate? Will the same doctor see me after surgery?”

・Check whether the doctor profile shows career, qualifications, society memberships and surgical experience

At AVAN TOKYO

Liposuction is handled by the director, Dr. Shin Moriwaki (more than 5,000 procedures as the operating surgeon, VASER Lipo certified, member of the Japan Society of Aesthetic Surgery (JSAS)), from consultation through surgery and post-operative check-ups. His career and qualifications are published on the doctor profile.

Point 2: Are cases published for the area you want treated?

A total such as “X cases” does not show how much experience a clinic has with the area you are interested in. The upper arms, abdomen, thighs and face differ in skin thickness, fat type and the problems that tend to occur.

How to check

・Are before-and-after photos published by body area?

・Do the photos state the time after surgery, the treated areas, anesthesia and risks?

・Is the operating surgeon named for each case?

At AVAN TOKYO

Our case gallery is organised by body area and names the operating surgeon for each case. For our approach to each area, see the liposuction guide.

Point 3: The total cost, including fees beyond the listed price

Liposuction price lists usually show the procedure fee. Anesthesia and other items are often charged separately, so comparing listed prices alone can hide large differences in the total.

How to check

・Are anesthesia, compression garments and pre-operative tests included in the procedure fee or charged separately?

・Does the price change with body size (BMI)?

・If there is a monitor price, what are the conditions (such as photos or video)?

・Will the estimate list each cost item separately?

At AVAN TOKYO

In addition to the procedure fee, anesthesia and a compression garment are charged. Anesthesia is ¥55,000 for IV sedation (¥110,000 when administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist) and ¥220,000 for general anesthesia by a board-certified anesthesiologist (tax included). With IV sedation or general anesthesia, a pre-operative blood test is required for safety (not needed if you have results from within the past six months). A BMI of 25–30 adds a ×1.5 multiplier to the procedure fee, and a BMI of 30 or above ×2. Monitor prices require your cooperation with photos and video and may end without notice. Prices for each area are listed tax-included on the price list; the final amount is confirmed at consultation and itemised in the estimate.

Point 4: Anesthesia options and safety management

Anesthesia for liposuction includes local anesthesia, IV sedation and general anesthesia, and the right choice depends on the area treated and your health. When a large area is treated at once, who manages the anesthesia matters for safety.

How to check

・Which types of anesthesia are available, and who manages each?

・Are safety checks such as a blood test done before surgery?

・Is there a place to rest after surgery, with checks before you go home?

At AVAN TOKYO

Besides local anesthesia, you can choose IV sedation or general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. For IV sedation or general anesthesia, we confirm safety with a pre-operative blood test before surgery. After surgery you rest in a private room, and we check your blood pressure and heart rate before you leave.

Point 5: Follow-up visits and how downtime is explained

After liposuction, once swelling, bruising and puffiness settle, the skin can feel firm (contracture) and then soften over several months. When and how often you are seen after surgery makes a difference to how your concerns are handled.

How to check

・Are the timing and number of post-operative visits set in advance?

・Will you be told beforehand the typical downtime for your area (when you can return to work or exercise)?

At AVAN TOKYO

We see you 1 week (suture removal), 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after surgery. Downtime depends on the area: for the upper arms, for example, desk work is usually possible the next day, light exercise after 1 week and strenuous exercise after 2 weeks. The guide for each area is on each area page.

Point 6: Conditions for revision if irregularities appear

Liposuction can occasionally leave irregularities or asymmetry. The conditions under which a revision is offered differ from clinic to clinic.

How to check

・Is there a revision guarantee, and if so, what does it cover, for how long and at what cost?

・Is the guarantee stated in writing or on the price list?

At AVAN TOKYO

Post-operative visits are done by the director who operated on you. If you add the revision guarantee plan with the ultrasound device (“Elsa”, +¥50,000 per area), you can have a revision for the cost of anesthesia only if irregularities concern you.

Point 7: Access and ease of consultation

Liposuction involves several visits: consultation, surgery and follow-ups. Comparing distance from the station, ease of booking and how you can consult in advance also helps.

How to check

・How far is the clinic from the nearest station, and how easy is it to visit after surgery?

・Can you consult in advance by LINE, WhatsApp or a web form?

・If you need a foreign language, is it supported?

At AVAN TOKYO

1-6-8 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, DEAR GINZA 3F. 1 min from Ginza-itchome Station Exit 6 (Yurakucho Line), 3 min from Kyobashi Station Exit 3 (Ginza Line), 5 min from Yurakucho Station and 7 min from Ginza Station Exit C8. Questions to ask at your consultation

・Which doctor will operate, and will the same doctor see me after surgery?

・May I see before-and-after photos for the area I want treated?

・What is the total in the estimate, and what are the costs other than the procedure fee?

・What anesthesia will be used, and who will manage it?

・When and how often are follow-up visits? When can I return to work and exercise?

・If irregularities appear, under what conditions can I have a revision?

・What risks are more likely for my body type, and what can liposuction not change?

FAQ

Q. Is it fine to choose based on rankings and reviews alone?

They are useful as a reference, but the surgeon, cases for your area, total cost and aftercare differ from clinic to clinic. Once you find a clinic you are interested in, we recommend checking the 7 points in this article at the consultation.

Q. Is the clinic with the lowest listed price the best value?

Listed prices may not include anesthesia, compression garments or tests, so compare the total. At AVAN TOKYO, the estimate lists the procedure fee separately from anesthesia, the compression garment and the pre-operative blood test.

Q. Can I have consultations at more than one clinic?

Yes. Asking each clinic the same questions makes the differences easier to see. Consultation at AVAN TOKYO is free, and we never push you into surgery.

Q. Are there cases where liposuction is not possible?

Depending on your body type, skin condition or medical history, liposuction may not give the change you expect, or may not be recommended for safety. We tell you whether it is suitable after examination. Results vary between individuals.

Q. Can I consult from overseas or from far away?

Yes. You can contact us in advance via LINE, WhatsApp or the web form in English, Chinese or Vietnamese.
