Frequently Asked Questions|Stem Cell & Exosome Therapy

We have compiled the most common questions received at AVAN TOKYO. Here are clear answers about regenerative medicine and treatments using stem cell culture supernatant, especially for first-time visitors.

About Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Culture Supernatant

Q1: What is stem cell culture supernatant?

It is a liquid containing components secreted during the process of culturing stem cells. It is rich in substances involved in cell regeneration and repair, such as growth factors, cytokines, and exosomes. Our clinic uses culture supernatant derived from adipose-derived stem cells, adopting products manufactured under strict quality control.

Q2: Do you inject stem cells themselves?

No, we do not use the cells themselves, but rather the liquid containing components secreted by stem cells. Unlike treatments that directly inject cells, this method is considered to have higher safety and lower risk of rejection.

Q3: How long does it take to see results?

This varies depending on the treatment content and individual differences. With infusion therapy, some people feel reduced fatigue after one to two sessions. For joint injections and scalp injections, since tissue repair and cell activation take time, many people tend to notice changes after about three to six sessions.

Q4: How long do the results last?

This also varies among individuals, but one session typically lasts about one to two months. By repeating treatments regularly, you may be able to maintain good condition for a longer period. This is why we recommend continuous treatment.

Q5: Are there any side effects?

There are very few reports of serious side effects, but subcutaneous bleeding at the injection site, mild swelling, or temporary fatigue may occur. These usually improve naturally within a few days. If you have any symptoms that concern you, please feel free to consult with us.

About Treatment Options

Q6: Which treatment is right for me?

The optimal treatment varies depending on your concerns and goals. For those seeking overall rejuvenation, we often suggest infusion therapy; for knee pain, joint injections; for hair thinning, scalp injections; and for skin concerns, injections or delivery into the skin. We will listen carefully during consultation and propose the best plan for you.

Q7: Can I combine multiple treatments?

Yes, you can. By combining infusion therapy for whole-body approach with local injections for areas of concern, higher results may be expected from both angles. We will propose the optimal combination according to your wishes and symptoms.

Q8: Is it painful?

This varies by treatment. Infusion therapy is similar to regular IV drips, and intranasal administration involves simply spraying like nasal drops, so there is no pain. For treatments involving injections, we use ultra-fine needles and apply anesthetic cream as needed to minimize pain.

Q9: How long does each treatment take?

Infusion therapy takes about 30 to 60 minutes, joint and scalp injections take about 30 to 40 minutes including preparation, and skin treatments take about the same time. Intranasal administration is completed in a few minutes. The initial visit includes consultation, so it will take a bit longer.

Q10: Is there any downtime?

Very little. Infusion therapy and intranasal administration allow you to return to normal life the same day. For treatments involving injections, mild redness or bruising at the injection site may remain for a few days, but it can be covered with makeup. For joint injections, we ask that you avoid intense exercise on the day of treatment.

About Fees and Payment

Q11: How much does it cost?

This varies by treatment content. Infusion therapy starts from 110,000 yen per session, joint injections from 110,000 yen per session, scalp injections from 88,000 yen per session, skin treatments from 110,000 yen per session, and intranasal administration from 55,000 yen per session. We also offer multi-session course pricing, which is more economical. Please see our fee schedule page for details.

Q12: Is insurance coverage available?

No, regenerative medicine at our clinic is elective treatment, so insurance does not apply. It is entirely self-pay.

Q13: What payment methods are available?

We accept cash, credit cards, debit cards, and medical loans. Credit cards accepted include VISA, MasterCard, JCB, American Express, and Diners Club. If you are interested in medical loans, please consult with us during your consultation.

Q14: Can I cancel a course midway?

Yes, you can. In that case, we will calculate the completed sessions at regular rates and refund the unused portion. However, a cancellation fee equivalent to 10% of the unused portion (maximum 20,000 yen) will be charged.

About Visits and Appointments

Q15: Is there a charge for the initial consultation?

Initial examination and consultation fees are free. Please feel free to consult with us.

Q16: How often do I need to visit?

At the beginning of treatment, we recommend a frequency of once every two weeks to once a month. After you begin to feel some results, we often suggest maintenance once every one to two months. Adjustments according to your schedule are possible, so please consult with us.

Q17: Are appointments easy to get?

This varies depending on your preferred date and time, but we make every effort to accommodate your wishes. We recommend booking early.

Q18: Can I make same-day appointments?

If there is availability, yes. However, since the initial consultation requires time, we recommend advance booking.

About Who Can Receive Treatment

Q19: Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit for adults. However, minors require parental consent.

Q20: Can men receive treatment?

Of course. We have many male patients at our clinic. We particularly receive many consultations regarding hair loss treatment and joint pain.

Q21: Can I receive treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

We generally decline treatment for pregnant and breastfeeding women, as safety has not been sufficiently established.

Q22: Can I receive treatment if I have a chronic condition?

This depends on the type and condition of the illness. We will ask you in detail during consultation, and the doctor will make a determination. If you are taking any medications, it would be helpful if you could bring your medication notebook or a note with the medication names.

Q23: I have allergies. Is that okay?

This depends on the content of the allergy. We will ask you in detail during consultation. If you have had allergic reactions to any treatment in the past, please be sure to inform us.

About External Products

Q24: Can I purchase only external products?

You need to receive a consultation for the first time, but after that, you can purchase products alone.

Q25: Which is more effective, external products or in-clinic treatments?

In-clinic treatments can deliver higher concentrations of components directly to the skin, so higher results may be expected. External products are effective for daily home care and for maintaining the results of in-clinic treatments. The best results can be expected by using them together.

Q26: Can I use them with sensitive skin?

The formula minimizes irritating ingredients, but we recommend a patch test when using for the first time. If you have concerns, please consult with us.

For International Patients

Q27: Can foreigners receive treatment?

Yes, we welcome you. We can communicate in English and can also arrange interpreter services if needed.

Q28: Can I consult before coming to Japan?

Yes, you can. We accept advance consultations via email. We can explain treatment content, fees, length of stay, and other details in advance.

Q29: How many days of stay are required?

This depends on the treatment content, but infusion therapy can be completed in one day. For treatments where multiple sessions are recommended, we will propose a plan that fits your length of stay.
